Provision Of Supportive Emergency

1.0  Introduction

 

Three years after famine ravange parts of Somalia, the country is threatened by another hunger crisis,

Food security has deteriorated sharply especially in south- central Somalia as a result of poor rains, restricted of access and conflict distrurpting economic and agriculture activities. Drought has been declaredin six regions of South- Central Somalia in July/August 2014. For vulnerable small scale header, FOA’s objective is to protect their remaining livestock assets throught the provision of water, fodder, vaccination and curative treatment service.

 

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and Central Livestock Professional Association (CERELPA) signed   Letter of Agreement (LOA) on 10th October 2014 for the provision of “Supportive Emetgency mass Treatmnent in Hiram, Galgadud, Middle Shabelle and South Mudug.

 

By this signed agreement approximately 1.5 million animals (single treatment – camels, cattle, sheep and goats) belonging to 37,500 households from the targeted pastoral and agro pastoral households (Hiram, Galgadud, M.Shabelle and South Mudug regions of Somalia) will receive supportive treatment against endo-parasites in this intervention. Further treatments (double treatment) shall be given against common bacterial infections, ecto-parasites and blood parasites when needed.

2.0     Objectives of the Project

The objective of this intervention is to enhance increased food availability and income at household and community levels in Southern Somalia by provision of supportive emergency treatment against drought related diseases to protect their livelihood assets. These activities will assist in preserving productive assets (i.e. livestock), which is essential component of enhancing resilience. Also will reduce the likelihoods of animal contagion in the regions covered.

The project/intervention is in line with the FAO Somalia Country Programme Framework (CPF) for the period 2014-17.

3.0 Project Activities:  CERELPA will undertake the following activities in Hiran, Galgadud, south Mudug and M.Shabelle regions of central Somalia:

  • Community sensitization;
  • Beneficiary identification;
  • Supportive emergency treatment against internal and external parasites, infectious diseases and blood parasites for 1.5 million heads who will receive first mandatory treatment with Albendazole 10% and other optional treatments with multivitamin, oxytetrocycline 20%, Ivermectin 1% and Samorin 1g.
  • Outputs/outcomes

 

Approximately 1.5 million (single treatment) and almost 1.5 to 2 million (double treatment) heads of sheep, goats, cattle, and camels owned by vulnerable herders will receive treatment against internal and external parasites, infectious diseases and blood parasites.

  • Achievements

1,521,849 (101 %) as single treatment and 217 2217 ( 100%) double treatment were  treated against internal and external  parasites, infectious diseases and blood parasites
