CERELPA signed an
agreement with DRC on 26th May 20123 for implementation of the
supply of Livestock Treatment Services & Veterinary Drugs.
The objective of
the project was to support pastoralist and agro-pastoralist communities with
veterinary services by using through the use of a voucher system,
enabling households to protect their livestock assets at a time when
household purchasing power for food and livestock production needs is extremely
poor.
2.0
Activities The
main project activities included:
Rapid emergency
livestock assessment and response identification
- Training of animal health workers
and provision of kits
- Provision of livestock treatment
services to 4032 beneficiaries in Jowhar and Balad districts
- 4.0 Achievements
· All
the project activities were successfully implemented in Jowhar and Balad
districts as per the plan despite the short project duration
· Twenty-four
CAHWs were trained including training on managing veterinary waste. The CAHWs
were provided with treatment kits. This enhances animal health capacity in
their respective villages.
· Four
livestock treatment field teams were established. Each teams composed six
community animal health workers.
· Developed
deployment framework and work plans of livestock treatment teams to undertake
the supply of livestock treatment and veterinary drugs to cover Jowhar and
Balad districts. CERELPA ensured proper technical and supervisory support to
the treatment teams.
· 4032
vouchers were collected from the target beneficiaries and these households
accessed treatment services and veterinary drugs. This is expected to reduce
livestock morbidity and mortality while at the same time enhancing livestock
productivity in the coming months.
